Some people have a short list of places they like to visit and they go there repeatedly every year. That’s fine, but there’s no adventure left after several visits; enjoyment is less intense, turning to a state of contentment. Shake it up a bit; choose a different location every year for one of the trips.

Go out of the comfort zone – you could be rewarded with the best vacation ever. If the trip isn’t fabulous you always have the option to simply leave. Try to choose a place that sounds good to everyone, like taking the family on ski holidays. These can be great, memorable experiences, especially if it’s the first time for everyone.

Since many people are curbing the big expenditures during this global financial climate, people are spending what they have domestically. Delaware is home to many ski resorts that are popular and well-known, and they often give great ski deals to families and large groups.

Perhaps snowshoe hiking is more the style of activity desired; there are trails at Delaware resorts for differing levels of fitness and vacationers can see more wildlife and scenic areas. Don’t forget a camera, because words cannot fully express the beauty experienced in the high wilderness, and bragging will be difficult without photos.

Most ski resorts have on-site instructors and lessons for skiing and snow boarding for all ages. For those who stress over dress, many lodges have in-house boutiques and rent equipment for a nominal fee. A ski holiday can be fun for everyone involved, even if nobody has skiing experience.

A Brief Overview of the Delaware Art Museum

The Delaware Art Museum actually started in 1911 with the death of an inspired illustrator, Howard Pyle, while on vacation in Italy. He had a loyal group of students, friends and admirers in his home of Wilmington, Delaware who met in the winter of 1912 to do something to honor his memory. The result was the formation of the Wilmington Society of the fine Arts.

Their original goal was to merely preserve and exhibit the works of Howard Pyle.  Generous donations from local patrons led to the purchase of about 100 works of art – paintings, drawings and prints – he had created. These became the foundation of the museum’s first art collection.

Earlier, in 1890, Samuel Bancroft, Jr. purchased his first Pre-Raphaelite work of art. He went on to purchase additional artwork and archival documents.  When he died in 1915 he had the largest Pre-Raphaelite collection of art outside of Great Britain. By 1935 his family donated his art collection to the Wilmington society of Fine Arts along with 11 acres of land near Kentmere Parkway on the condition that a museum be built to house Bancroft’s considerable collection.

By 1938 it was renamed the Delaware Art Center. In 1943 the Wilmington Academy of Art joined the Delaware Art Center establishing educational programs.  The H. Fletcher Brown Education wing expanded the education wing in 1956.

The art collections were expanded with American artists like Winslow Homer, Frederic Edwin and Paul Cadmus during the 50’s and 60’s. In 1961 Helen Farr Sloan oversaw an additional 5,000 works. The American Association of Museums accredited the museum in 1972 and prompted the name change to the Delaware Art Museum.

Historic Delaware Offers Educational Fun to Children

Delaware is the First State, or the Constitution State. As one can tell by the states nicknames, it was the very first state to ratify the constitution. However, it has many attractions that are meant just for the smaller crowd.
One such place is downtown Brandywine. Find stores like Apple Bottom Clothes and other shopping amenities where items for all ages and interests can be found.

The Delaware Children’s Museum in Wilmington is very new and caters to kids ranging in age from toddler to preteen. They are entertained by educational exhibits, creativity studios, and climbing structures.

Wilmington is also home to the Delaware Children’s Theatre. It is an historic theater house with performances for children ages four and up. Shows are weekend events.

The Brandywine Zoo has over 150 kinds of wild animals in exhibits that maximize opportunites to see them. It’s the only zoo in the entire state.

DuPont Theater, Children’s Series is located in an historic 1,252-seat Victorian theater. It is the oldest theater still in operation in the US and it also presents traveling Broadway shows touring the country. Regular schedules include programming for children of school ages.

For the sea-lovers, there is the Kalmar Nyckel — The Tall Ship of Delaware. It’s an authentic replica of the same ships used in the 17th century that brought the first settlers to America. It holds public dockside tours, pirate events, and day sails.

A family destination, Herrâ Food Factory Tours are educational and fun. Tours are one hour long, and they take visitors throughout the plant, showing them how they make and package snack foods.

Delaware is often referred to as a precious piece of jewel on the eastern coast of the United States. Lying between Washington DC and New York, Delaware is a dream destination for people. Offering a scenic view almost always and backed by a vibrant past, Delaware has much to show to visitors.

Delaware is full of picturesque parks, museums, beaches, jungles, racing events, sports centers, and sprawling universities. There’s a lot to see and do in Delaware.

Delaware has a splendid past. Museums are an integral part of any tour to Delaware. Museums here will excite the traveler more than anywhere else in the world. Not just museums, Delaware has famous monuments that appeal to the history-hungry traveler. Such monuments are built to felicitate the achievements and sacrifices of people. It also pays its respect to the heritage, and culture of Delaware.

One such place is a nature-bountiful estate called Winterthur Museum. With beautiful gardens beset, the place still retains the eighteenth century charm. It is the residence of Henry Francis DuPont. This person was a plant lover and also a collector of valuable artifacts. This museum shows Henry’s collection. The collection is a variety of things like furniture, and paintings.

Another museum called Delaware Museum of Natural History showcases exhibits that make people think and educate themselves about real-world things. One can get to solve games and puzzles. Dinosaur skeletons will reveal how why Spielberg made Jurassic Park with so much conviction!

Animals and mammals are exhibited in their natural environment. This is what makes it really natural. A must-see is the variety of sea shells at display. Much has been talked and written about the seashell gatherings at the museum. Exotic and rare sea shells are at display here.

The Delaware Memorial Bridge and The Air Mobility Command Museum

The Delaware Memorial Bridge is a pair of bridges that are suspended and placed across the Delaware River. The bridges connect Delaware with New Jersey. It is both a national and interstate highway. The bridge is an important route of connectivity for long distance travel. The bridges were built to honor the people from New Jersey and Delaware who died in World War 2.

The Delaware Memorial Bridge recently received an infusion of capital. As part of Capital Improvement Program, the Delaware River and Bay Authority inducted a long-term capital fund. The capital fund will be used to maintain the infrastructure of the bridge. Things like steelwork, security, elevators and so on will get a facelift. A traffic control system will be installed at the bridge. The toll collection will be electronic and some old traffic signals will give way for sophisticated ones.

The Air Mobility Command Museum offer you exhibits on the stuff that is used in war. This museum shows a lot of stuff that is used by America in war. A lot of different technologies from different eras can be seen here. You will exactly why America is so strong at wars. With the range and variety of military paraphernalia displayed at this museum it is difficult to not acknowledge America’s prowess in airtime battles.

The Air Mobility Command Museum is located at the Dover Air Force Base. You can see a hangar, and a place where a lot of airplanes are parked. Some of the planes are vintage and go back to World War 2 times. Visitors can sit in the cockpits of certain planes to get a feel of how it feels to sit in a metal bird. Visitors are mainly invited to sit in the Starlifters.

The museum shows things related to America’s air force history. One of them is the Berlin Airlift. A guide is present who will talk to visitors about the different artifacts on display.

Fenwick Island and Lewes Island

Fenwick Island is a town in Delaware. The population of the town stands at around five hundred people. Rehoboth beach is situated here. Fenwick Islands is known for its quietness, and is referred to as a quiet getaway. Fenwick Islands are also known for their buzzing vacation atmosphere for solitude seeking people.

Fenwick is derived from the name Thomas Fenwick. This person was an agriculturist from England. At Fenwick Island you can have lots of fun in the summer. The place is ideal for a quiet getaway from the hustle and bustle of an urban life. The town of Lewes is known as a quiet resort, and is referred to in the same vein as Fenwick Island. It along with Fenwick Islands makes up the beach resort area at Delaware. Constitutionally, Delaware is among the first states to be setup in the United States, and Lewes was the first town. So Lewes is also known as the first town in the first state. Lewes was home to settlements from Europe. A look around town will reveal many aspects of Europe. Mainly Dutch people came and settled down here. Dutch traders made the Swan Valley as their trading terminal, which is used for commerce in whales, and other commodities.

Lewes is also a popular vacation spot in Delaware. From Delaware Bay, this town is much closer and lower. Yet, due to its proximity to the beach it is considered a beach resort. You can visit the Zwaanendael Museum here to get to know about the town’s history.

Zwaanendael Museum was constructed to acknowledge the European settlements that happened during 1631. Primarily to felicitate the Dutch settlers, the Zwaanendael Museum looks much like Netherland’s City Hall museum. The museum offers interesting insights into how people lived during that time. It offers a glimpse into the many things people used to live and work. In a way, it shows how different people from different countries shaped America.

Ice skating has always evoked a lot of interest. Skating enthusiasts can visit the Pond Ice Arena to get some skating fun. Being Delaware’s premier ice sport complex, this place is visited by many people who like ice skating. You can get to see a lot of people at practice here. People do the skating professionally or just for fun. Whatever the case, it’s definitely a great experience gliding like flying!

There are a lot of skating programs on offer. You can take education classes with professionals who have competed in the Olympics. On Friday nights, when the sky is bright black, you can glide in joy to the latest music in town played by a DJ. This feature is named the Cosmic Skate. Like its name, it does evoke a feeling of being in the cosmos when skating on fine ice is befriended by titillating music.

The Pond Ice Arena is also a place that is capable to host private ceremonies. The Pond Café offers tasty bites and a perfect ambience to glide coolly on and off the ice.

Beaches in Delaware
Delaware has an expansive stretch across the Atlantic. This gives it a lot of beach miles. It is a good looking place with beautiful beaches that hold blonde beaches. The sands, the sea, and the sunshine radiate charismatically over the coast. Rehoboth Beach and Dewey Beach are some of the known beaches in Delaware.

At the beaches you can make use of the leisure and fun activities. The waterfront area has shopping complexes and fine dining restaurants. You can enjoy swimming and surfing here, and enjoy post-sea sessions at the shopping complex and restaurants.

Commuters Find Delaware an Attractive Place to Live

Delaware, by land area the second smallest state in the U. S., is a great place to live if you work in Philadelphia, Washington, D.C. or Baltimore. The commute to Philadelphia is not too long from the northern part of the state (New Castle County). It is less than 40 miles from Wilmington, Delaware’s largest city, to Philadelphia. Some early history of the area indicates that some of northern Delaware could have become part of Pennsylvania if Pennsylvania’s government had been paying attention. Much of central and southern Delaware (Kent and Sussex Counties, respectively) is just over 100 miles from Baltimore and Washington, D.C. Many people choose to make their homes in Delaware while commuting across Chesapeake Bay to work in those cities because they find Delaware to be a desirable place to live. Central and southern Delaware is less densely populated than the north. The three counties named above are the entire state.

A plus for families with children is the state government’s generous support of public education. Delaware is at the forefront among states in preparation to receive Race to the Top funding from the federal government. The state government is very positive about involvement in reforms to implement best practices in classrooms. There are over 120,000 students in Delaware public schools, in about 20 districts. Over 25,000 students also attend private schools, including about 3,000 Delaware residents who attend schools in other states. The state has about a score of charter schools, most of them located in New Castle County.

Another thing that residents may find attractive is that there is no sales tax on purchases in Delaware, although business are taxed on their gross receipts, so that is reflected in prices.

Surprisingly, for a state only about a hundred miles long, from north to south, the climate varies somewhat, with milder temperatures experienced in the south. Perhaps this is due to relative proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and Chesapeake Bay. The difference in elevation above sea level is not much. Most of the state is located on the Delmarva Peninsula, named for the three states that share its land: Delaware, Maryland and Virginia. Delaware boasts a number of attractive beaches on its eastern shore.

From summer cottages to luxury mansions to condominiums, there are many accommodations available for rent or purchase on the Delaware coast. There is a lot more coast on Delaware Bay, and the Atlantic Ocean than you would expect if the coast were more or less straight. The median cost of homes in many communities in Kent and Sussex Counties is no more than $200,000, making them quite affordable. The slower-paced living in relatively small communities is a plus. An excellent school system and no sales tax add to the quality of life. For a more affluent crowd, Fenwick Island has many homes and condos valued at three-quarters of a million dollars.
Delaware has homes right on the beach, as well as many within just a few miles. Older neighborhoods and classic styles, or new construction in planned communities can be found. For the tightest budgets, mobile homes may be the solution. Whether you want a year-round residence or a vacation home, you should be able to find whatever suits you. There are many realtors to help you in your search.
The climate on the coast is relatively mild, making outdoor activity pleasant much of the year. Sailing, fishing, kayaking, bicycling and walking are all available. For those who like to travel a bit, there is a ferry from Lewes, Delaware to Cape May, New Jersey, with beautiful ocean scenery. Dover, the state capital, has many attractions, from the Air Mobility Command Museum to the Agricultural Museum and Village. Dover Air Force Base is located nearby, although there is currently no major airport in Delaware – air travelers use airports in nearby Baltimore, Washington, D.C., or Philadelphia.
