Delaware is geographically the second smallest state in the United States, but there are plenty of activities packed into the small space. Families and couples alike can enjoy a relaxing vacation to a tourist-friendly state without having to fight massive crowds and long lines.

Rehoboth Beach is one of the most popular places to visit while in the state. The city is quite small, but boasts a boardwalk with games and rides, as well as delicious dining options and a water park. There are also places to fish, and trails for walking and biking to take in the sights of the beach.

Just on the border of Maryland, guests can visit the Quiet Resorts, which are made up of South Bethany, Bethany Beach, and Fenwick Island. These spots are geared towards families as well, with small boutiques featuring handmade local handicrafts. Miniature golf, water parks, and go-karts are just a few of the attractions that kids and parents are sure to enjoy together while staying here.

Sports fans can enjoy a trip to Riverfront Wilmington, which is home to a semi-pro baseball team. The stadium often has promotional family nights, offering discounted tickets and meals to those traveling together. Since the town is located just off the water, the seafood is also quite excellent.

Some may jokingly ask “Dela-where?” upon hearing of plans to travel to the small location. However, families who want to enjoy a small-town feel with plenty to do are sure to enjoy their vacation to the beautiful beachfront communities.

Families Love Delaware Getaways

For your next family vacation, consider a different locale that will give you everything you want. Delaware is the perfect place for a family to spend a summer vacation. With beautiful, clean beaches and plenty of fun attractions, Delaware vacations will likely become a tradition.

When you want to catch some of sunny rays, head to Bethany Beach. Bethany Beach has maintained an old-fashioned character that people find charming. Bethany Beach is extremely family-friendly and is a great place to build sand castles with the little kiddies or go swimming in the ocean. To dry off, go walking along the boardwalk and peruse the storefronts or stop for a bite to eat.

Head over to Dover on another day and see the sights that both modern and historical Dover can offer. Catch a NASCAR race at the Dover International Speedway. The John Dickinson Plantation will show you what life for a Quaker was like in this living, authentic period museum. Delaware Governor’s Mansion is another historical hotspot where the state’s previous governors lived. Make sure you catch Spence’s Bazaar every Tuesday and Friday. The sellers have an enormous variety of goods including local, handmade Amish specialties.

If you head over to Wilmington, check out Nemours Mansion and Gardens. You can go through the historical property. They also have gardens and trails so you can walk in the beautiful, historical setting and stretch your legs a bit. The Brandywine Zoo is another great place for children, especially younger ones. Plan to spend dinner in one of Wilmington’s “Little Italy” restaurants.

When traveling in the summer, a few tips will enhance your experience. Make sure you and your children drink water throughout the day. Keep snacks handy to eat between meals. Take pictures at every great spot you visit and send them as postcards home to your family and friends. They will get to enjoy your trip with you and know you are thinking of them.

Delaware Vacations with Children

Delaware, nicknamed the First State because it was the first state to ratify the US Constitution, which it did on December 7, 1787, packs a powerful punch in the tourism market, because Delaware is the second smallest state. The small size makes it easy to see many attractions, regardless of their location within the state, while vacationing in Delaware.

Fun adventures for children in Delaware include Jungle Jim’s at Rehoboth Beach. Jungle Jim’s is Delaware’s largest water park. It features go-karts, bumper boats, and mini–golf as well as many water rides. Funland is also located at Rehoboth Beach.

Children always enjoy a day at the beach, and Delaware offers many options including Rehoboth Beach, Bethany Beach, Delaware Seashore State Park, and Dewey Beach. The beaches offer opportunities for a relaxing day to swim, sunbathe, or build sand castles. If you prefer a more active beach adventure, there are options for water skiing, sail boarding or fishing. Boat fishing is also available at various locations along the coast. The Mile Long Boardwalk is a great way to see the views of the beach and get some exercise at the same time.

Another fun stop for children visiting Delaware is the Brandywine Zoo, a zoo that displays over 150 mammals, birds, and reptiles. If your child is an animal lover, this is a guaranteed hit and should not be missed.

The Delaware Museum of Natural History is an option if you child is a fan of dinosaurs and the natural world. They offer interactive displays to engage and teach, including life-size dinosaurs, seeing under the ocean, and visiting an African watering hole. The newest exhibit, the Nature Nook, opened in October 2010, explores various animal habitats.

These are just a sampling of the many fun and exciting things to explore and visit when vacationing in Delaware with children of all ages.

Choosing a holiday destination for the entire family is a nightmare. With the youngest family members wanting amusement parks and rides in their trip whereas adults want clubs, bars, and peace on their trip. It’s too hard to mix both when the two are complete opposites. Whoever decides the place is at the center of criticism while during the trip and there after every time they remember about the trip. Hence planning a trip has to include something for everyone. Delaware in one of the few places in America where you can find something for everyone to enjoy.
Decide what you like to do first instead of deciding the destination. Like hiking, amusement parks, tanning, just relax or eat. Consult all the family members what do they like to do. Once you do this, the hardest part is over. All you have to do now is find suitable destinations in Delaware which match these choices. It is certain that you can find almost anything that anyone desires from a vacation in Delaware. Hence find a guide or books that list all the places found in Delaware. Using the internet is also a great source to make planning trips. Use maps to chart out even the route and make stops between the way to other destinations. This will add the little cherry on the top to your holiday. Some of the best destinations that every family member enjoys in Delaware are the Wood side Farm Creamery, Biggs museum of American-art, the Bombay Hook National park and many more such wonderful destinations. These destinations offer fun and entertainment for the entire family. Proper planning is very necessary to an enjoyable experience. River Basin of Delaware

Delaware is famous for its natural water attractions. One among Delaware’s water attractions is the Delaware river basin. This river basin begins its journey in New York in the Cat Skill Mountains. It is a 420 mile long river that branches into a number of tributaries in Delaware.
It is a beautiful river which has more than half of its length located inside forests. It has 5 national parks that are located around this river. It is a very important river that brings water to many of the town and agriculture that bank on the sides of this river basin. It is estimated that this river is the source of water for more than 21 million people. It has been of great biological significance with a huge number of fishes that inhabit these waters. If you are looking for the wild like, there is no scarcity of it here. Beavers, bears, bobcat, fox, dogs, rabbits are a common sight around this river basin. It is also a critical stopping point for migratory birds or multiple species, guess estimates suggest above 200 birds can be found in this River basin area at any time. It also includes many wetlands such as the great march which is a location not to be missed. If you love to see Horse shoe crabs in their natural environment, then you really need to visit the Big Stone beach for some of the best horse shoe crab breeding locations in America. The rivers provide a good source for water sports such as boating, kayaking, canoeing, fishing, etc. Many hotels on the river can be found here that will take you through the river to the other river bank destinations. It can be an experience of a lifetime to take part in hiking, or any of the water recreational activities here.

The Beauty of the Pacific Islands

The Pacific Islands, which include the Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Republic of Marshall Islands, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, and others, are some of the most beautiful places in the world to visit. Each of them contains its own unique qualities.

In Papua, New Guinea, for example, it’s not impossible to see indigenous people who still practice cannibalism. Most of them are in very remote areas, however, so don’t worry about just walking up on someone doing this.

If this is a little too weird for your taste, visit the island of Fiji, which played a huge role in the mutiny that occurred on the British ship “Bounty.” It was the desire of Christian Fletcher, and others of his crew, to remain on this literal tropical paradise that led him taking over the ship and setting Captain Bligh and his supporters adrift.

The island of Vanuatu was the recent setting for the TV series “Survivor.” If you’re like many people, this may have been the first time you had even heard of this island, or at least thought about it since you studied world history in middle or high school.

The island of Samoa is known for its very large men, some of whom have come to the United States to play college and professional sports. When you see these hulking bruisers standing next to “average size” players, you may wonder what exactly is in theSamoanair that grows them so big.

There are lots of resources that you can utilize to plan your trip to any of the Pacific Islands. They can give you information on travel arrangements, hotel accommodations, and things to see. What the state of Delaware lacks in size, it makes up for in tourist attractions. This little state packs a punch when it comes to entertainment. It’s famous for not taxing consumers, which draws shoppers from all over the region looking to save a few dollars on sales tax, but there is a variety of other fun activities for the whole family.

Delaware has a rich history and a diverse landscape. The small land mass makes it easy to explore all of the regions in one short vacation; the state is just 96 miles long, and an average of nine miles wide. From cultural attractions to outdoor recreation like camping, hiking, bird watching and fishing, a vacation to Delaware has something to offer everyone in the group.

Every Region Has Something to Offer

Starting in New Castle County in the north, enjoy spectacular spring and fall colors that vividly paint the landscape. Enjoy the scenery of the enchanting Brandywine Valley, then dine in style in Wilmington. Visit the theater, see a dance performance or check out one of the many clubs if the group is in the mood to dance.

Kent County in central Delaware is home to Dover, the state’s capital. Dover is a peaceful city with many historical sites that were important to the founding of the nation. Dover Downs is a perennial favorite, with horse racing and plenty of headlining entertainment.

Southern Delaware and Sussex county is the place to escape to for ultimate relaxation. Small, picturesque towns dot the countryside, and beaches line the coast. Spas, golf courses, antique stores and other activities provide entertainment for all. Sight-seeing is always popular, with beautiful seashore easily accessed from many points.

Fun in Any Season, For Any Occasion

Delaware is also a great place to visit during the holidays. There are many festivals, parades, special events, and fireworks to celebrate just about any occasion. Summer is the most popular time to visit Delaware, but spring and fall can be lovely with milder temperatures and lower humidity than the summer months. Spectacular fall foliage draws many visitors from nearby metropolitan areas every year.

Exploring Coastal Delaware

Delaware has some of the most spectacular beaches on the entire Atlantic seaboard, many of which are located in the four Delaware State Parks. The shoreline provides ample recreation opportunities and more than a few scenic vistas.

Delaware Bay of the Atlantic Ocean makes up the eastern border of the state; the very northeastern corner of the state lies on the Delaware River. With all of this coastline, it’s no surprise the beaches are one of the state’s delights.

The state seashore park system is made up of four parks, each with unique character, providing an array of activities on and off the sand. Delaware Seashore State Park is the most popular park in the state, and is surrounded by water, with the Atlantic to the east, and Indian River and Rehoboth Bays to the west.

Popular activities at Delaware Seashore State Park include sunbathing and swimming, in two main swimming areas staffed with lifeguards. Boating and fishing are also popular year round, both on the ocean and on the banks of the Indian River bay. The salt marsh habitat of the Thompson Island Preserve is home to many species of local wildlife.

Sailboarding and surfing are also popular on some of the quality waves in the park, and there is one beach designated solely for surfing, one of only a few in the entire state. Windsurfing has grown in popularity in the bay, and is very entertaining to watch from the shore.

Other parks in coastal Delaware include the ‘Quiet Beach’, Fenwick Island State Park, which provides an escape from seasonal crowds. Three miles of coastline are perfect for swimming, surfing, and sunbathing, with white sandy beaches that gradually slope into the ocean. The best way to experience the ocean is through a seaside house. Dreams can come true when you pair great destinations with great vacation rentals. There are so many choices including spicy villas, sexy condos, and sparkling homes.

Holts Landing State Park is a hidden gem. With 203 acres of stunning scenery including hardwood forests, bay shore beaches and grassy fields. Crabbing and fishing are popular activities, as well as hiking, picnicking and wildlife viewing.

Cape Henlopen’s beaches are popular for swimming and sunbathing, and the park’s open spaces include an 18-hole disc golf course, year round hiking and biking trails, a basketball court, and picnicking facilities.

Delaware’s Top Tourist Attractions

Delaware has a lot to offer the curious traveler, and though it’s small in size, there are activities to entertain all ages. With ample outdoor recreation opportunities, and a rich cultural heritage, the diversity of activities is surprising for such a small state!

Here are a few of the top tourist activities not to be missed on a Delaware vacation:

The Woodside Farm Creamery in Hockessin. Their homemade ice cream is famous for its quality and creative flavor combinations. The Woodside farm has been in operation since 1796. Cows are grazed on top-quality alfalfa, rye and orchard grasses, and clover, producing high quality milk that is ideal for ice cream making.

DiscoverSea Shipwreck Museum in Fenwick Island. This museum houses artifacts from 12 shipwrecks, containing one of the world’s largest collections of shipwrecked objects recovered from the sea. There are more than 10,000 artifacts displayed at any given time.

Dogfish Head Brewery in Milton. This adventurous craft brewery makes beer, vodka, rum, and gin in its 100,000 square foot facility. Tours are available three days per week, and there is an onsite restaurant and year round entertainment.

The Historic Wilmington & Western Railroad in Wilmington. One of the best ways to see Delaware’s beautiful landscape is on a Wilmington & Western Railroad tour. The historic railroad has been in operation sine 1867, and travels through the Red Clay Valley on a regular and special event schedule.

The Goodstay House and Gardens in Wilmington. This historic house and garden date back to the 1740′s; the garden includes some heirloom species, such as a wisteria vine that is more than 100 years old. Now owned by the University of Delaware, the house and garden have been restored to their former splendor, and are open to the public.

The Marian Coffin Gardens at Gibraltar in Wilmington. This six acre estate contains a series of garden rooms, each with a unique personality and purpose. Garden features such as fountains, archways, and staircases can be found all over the property. The Italian-style garden pavilion takes center stage; its fountain creates a peaceful environment.
